With Massachusetts playing a prominent role in the history of America, there are a number of different attractions on the North Shore. The city of Salem is well known for its 1692 witch trials, and Marblehead is one of the world's premeir sailing centers. Gloucester is a historic fishing port, and Essex is well known for its antique stores. If you are looking for sand beaches, Plum Island or Crane's Beach can satisfy your urge for the suntan lotion. Rockport is a town of the arts with lots of quaint shops and artisans. And, don't forget that New England has the best fall foliage in the world.

The Mansion on Turner Hill - Ipswich Road, Ipswich 978-356-7070. This is a grand turn of the century estate that offers tours and afternoon tea.
Castle Hill - 290 Argilla Road, Ipswich (Trustees of Reservations: 978-356-4351). Next to Crane's Beach, the Crane Estate not only is a Bed and Breakfast, but has estate tours and concerts. There are also tours of movie sites and a view of three states.
Crane's Beach - Argilla Road, Ipswich. This gorgeous beach is open to the public. Its waters are protected by natural sand bars, providing a nice place to relax. Crane's Beach is also open to horses during the off season.
Myopia Polo - Route 1A, Hamilton 978-468-7956. Polo matches usually every Sunday.
Bradley Palmer State Park - Asbury Street, Topsfield 978-887-5931. This horse-friendly 721-acre park is right around the corner from Groton House Farm, and offers trails for all types of enthusiasts. There is also a children's play area near the Southeast end of the park.
Willowdale State Forest - Linebrook Road, Ipswich 978-887-5931. This horse-friendly 2400-acre forest adjoins Bradley Palmer State Park and offers lots of trails for you to explore.
Appleton Farm Grass Rides - Cutler Road, Hamilton. (Trustees of Reservations: 978-356-4351) Five miles of trails radiate out from a central spot called the Roundabout. Cross-country skiing in the winter.
Essex River Cruises - Essex Marina, 35 Dodge Street, Essex 978-768-6981/ Cruise the scenic Essex River and tour Hog Island.
Essex Shipbuilding Museum - 66 Main Street, Essex. This museum has many exhibits, videos, and models associated with the art of shipbuilding.
John Heard House and Franklin Waters Museum - 54 South Main Street, Ipswich 978-356-2461. This house, built in 1795, features early American and Chinese furninshings, and a restored carraige collection.
John Whipple House - 53 South Main Street, Ipswich 978-356-2811, This 1640 house has herb gardens and period furnishings.
Wenham Museum - 132 Main Street, Wenham 978-468-2377. The Claflin-Richards House features a model and toy train exhibit, an international doll collection, and toy soldiers.
Wolf Hollow - 144 Essex Road, Route 133, Ipswich 978-356-0216. Offers exhibits on the American gray wolf and its environmental role in a natural habitat.
Sandy Point State Reservation - Parker River Wildlife Refuge Road, Ipswich 978-462-4481. This 73-acre reservation offers hiking and fishing and nice views.
Essex River Basin Adventures - 1 Main Street, Essex 978-768-3722. Offers sea and river kayak or canoe trips, and instruction.
Ipswich River Wildlife Reservation - 87 Perkins Row, Topsfield 978-877-9264. This wildlife reservation is made of 2800 acres, and has ten miles of trails, an observation tower, and plenty of flora and fauna.
